Interview of: Mr. Joe & Mrs. Emma. Barnes
Experience:
No, never been foster parents. Took care of two nephews for approx 6 months when they were nine/ten. Names, Jeremy & Josh. Mother on drugs, dad overseas- navy.
Parenting:
Joe lets Emma parent mostly. He's backup. Likes to take the boys to sports, fishing, bowling after church on Sunday's. Emma, talks to boys, lets them know what she expects.- takes away video games as punishment. Boys have tantrums, then apologize. Sometimes she gives video game back after they apologize, sometimes she does what she says she would do. ex. You can't play for one entire day, or until the weekend.
How do you feel about the situation?
It's hard talking about their mom (both said this). She hurt them so much. Don't want to bring it up. Training tells them to talk about it though. Working on it/Emma said this. Joe was quite.
Training:
The trainings on loss and abandonment showed them that even if the boys seem happy and well adjusted deep down inside doubt and anxiety about whether their parents truly love them. Will they ever go home- they worry about that. Don't know what to say in those conversations.
Supports:
Emma has her sister Katie and her mom Jodie. They all talk a few times week. Jodie very supportive, insightful. Katie, big heart, listens more than gives advice. Church helps. Gives inspiration and hope. Joe is big support
Joe has his brother Kenny. Kenny works in D&A good at understanding behaviors. Joes likes talking to Kenny but usually tells Emma what Kenny said and she uses techniques with the boys. Joe feels his job to support Emma.
